The Rev. Howard P. Horn, 93 of Keene, NH, formerly of Petersham, died Friday, October 13, 2006, in Keene, NH.
He was born in Kansas City, MO, on July 11, 1913, the son of the late Walter L. and the late Ethel C. (Hart) Horn.
His wife of 57 years, Bonnie B. (Johnson) Horn died in 1995.
He graduated from Northeast High School and Junior College in Kansas City, MO; received his bachelor´s and master´s degrees in religion from Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma. He finished his theogical training at Hartford Theological Seminary in Hartford, CT, graduating with the Master of Divinity degree.
After a student assignment in Mounds, Oklahoma he served churches in West Brookfield and Millis, Mass. He served as an Air Force Chaplain during and after World War II, with seven years of service in the United States, Phillipines and Japan before discharge with the rank of Major. He was Chaplain of the House of Representatives for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the early 1940's.
After his military tenure he served churches in Pittsfield and Peterborough, New Hampshire and Winsted, CT before being called to Syracuse, NY where he was active in inter-racial relations. As chairman of the Interfaith Committee on Religion and Race, in 1967 he delivered the annual lecture on social implications of the gospel at LeMoyne University. In 1970 he became the pastor of the Athol Congregational Church in Athol, MA from which he retired to nearby Petersham, MA. In retirement he filled interim pastorates in Fitchburg, Ashburnham, West Brookfield, and North Orange, later doing supply preaching in the area when local pastors were on vacation.
His hobbies included travel, camping, and woodwork. He was a member of the Orthodox Congregational Church in Petersham, the Petersham American Legion Post No. 415, the Petersham Historical Society, the Petersham Craft Center and the Petersham Council on Aging. In 2001, he moved to Keene, NH where he was a resident at Langdon Place, a retirement community.
He is survived by two sons, Paul L. Horn and his wife, Barbara of Denver, CO, Earl H. Horn and his wife, Susan of Harrisville, NH; two daughters, Karen A. Dooks and her husband, Edward of Lexington, MA, Sherrill L. Horn of Sverna Park, VA; one sister, Virginia L. Edwards of Colorado Springs, CO; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 22, 2006, at 2:00 pm in the Petersham Orthodox Congregational Church, Route 32, Petersham, MA. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours.
