ROYALSTON - Hugh G. Blake, age 94, of Royalston died on February 15, 2017 at Quabbin Valley Healthcare. Hugh was born June 29, 1922 in Medfield, MA. He is the son of the late Leslie C. and the late Alice M. (Gunther) Blake.
Hugh grew up in Milton and attended schools there. He graduated from Wentworth Technical Institute in Boston in 1943, majoring in Architectural Construction. He lived in Milton until 1981 and since then has lived in the Royalston and Athol area.
He served in the U. S. Army during World War II serving in Rome, Arno and North Apennines, Italy and Rhineland, and Germany.
He worked for his father at the family business L. C. Blake Construction, continuing to operate it until 1968. From 1968 until his retirement in 1981 he worked for Vappi General Contractors as a project manager.
Hugh was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Milton A.F. & A.M. and the Shrine. He always
enjoyed working on building projects, he and his wife completely rebuilt a home in Royalston as well as building a new one years later. He taught wood carving at the Templeton Senior Center, and helped family and friends with building projects. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by two daughters: Charlotte Corstange of Templeton, Barbara Coughlin and her
husband Robert of Cambridge and one son: David Blake and wife Diane of Sandwich; He also has eight grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren; two great great grandchildren and a dear friend, Scott Griffin of Royalston.
He is predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Alta M. (Miller) Blake, his son-in-law, Willard Corstange, and sister-in-law, June Tibbetts.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 11:30 AM at Higgins-O’Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main Street, Athol with Rev. Dave Melvim officiating. Burial will follow in Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon.
A calling hour will be held Monday, February 20th from 4-7 PM in the funeral home.
