BALDWINVILLE - Irwin D. Hendricken, 84 of Baldwinville died Saturday, June 20, 2015 at University of Massachusetts Hospital in Worcester.
He was born February 27, 1931 in Dorchester, the son of Daniel E. Hendricken and Catherine J. (Phelan) Hendricken. He grew up in Waltham and graduated from Waltham High School. He attended UMass Stockbridge for four years and then served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War as a bombardier. He was a prisoner of war for several months after getting shot down in Korea.
Mr. Hendricken worked for the Fernald School in Waltham for 44 years retiring in 1989.
He was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Church, a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Bishop Bevan Assembly #396 Otter River, a member of the Gardner V.F.W. Oliva Case Post #905 where he was active as a member of the honor guard, and a member of the Baldwinville American Legion Post # 373, past Commander.
He was a member of the Gardner Municipal Golf Course, Past President of the former Petersham Country Club. He was an avid gardener and a member of the WOTS Club at Wachusett Mountain.
He leaves his wife of 47 years Vilma (Basso) Hendricken; a brother-in-law John Basso; brothers and sisters Bernice Kelly, Lornie Hendricken, J. P. Hendricken and his wife Marie, Elaine Wood, Diane MacKay and her husband Donald, Coleen Rodgerson and her husband Howard, Leo Hendricken and his wife Helen, Claire Hendricken and many nephews and nieces.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Frank Hendricken and Phelan Hendricken.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, June 24 at 11:30 AM in St. Vincent de Paul Church, 1 Forest Ave., Baldwinville. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon.
At his request there are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made in his memory to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016.
