ATHOL - James L. Carey, 78 of 750 Riceville Rd, Athol, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Warwick, on March 31, 1929, the son of the late Archie and the late Grace (Parsons) Carey.
Mr. Carey grew up in North Orange. He left school to enter the service and later received his G.E.D. He served in the Air Force from 1946 to 1949.
He retired from Rodney Hunt after 35 years as a Machine Shop Supervisor in 1992. He owned and operated a logging company and the former J.L. Carey & Sons Millwork Co.
Mr. Carey was involved with Habitat for Humanity, the Orange Food Shelter and the Fair Organization for the South Athol United Methodist Church of which he was a former member of the Men's Club. He was a member of the Athol/Orange Baptist Church.
Mr. Carey enjoyed being surrounded by his family. He also enjoyed vegetable gardening, deep sea fishing, golfing, and motorcycles. He especially enjoyed woodworking and making furniture for his grandchildren.
He leaves his wife of 44 years: Maxine (Bromley) Carey; eleven children: Thomas Carey and wife Barbara of Winter Haven, FL, James Carey Jr. and wife Cristy of Monson, ME, Robert Carey and wife Anne of Levant, ME, Brenda Hickey of Leominster, Chris Carey and wife Kelly of New Salem, Brian Carey and wife Martha of Athol, Charles Cote of Mount Airy, NC, Gilbert Cote of Gardner, Sandra Hamlett of Baldwinville, Patricia O'Lari of Athol, Michele Cote of Baldwinville, twenty one grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his two daughters: Cindy Bennett who died in 2001 and Kim Carver who died in 2003; his four brothers: John, Raymond, Archie and Fred Carey and his three sisters: Lillian, Mary and Blanche.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 20, 2007 at 11:00 am in the Athol-Orange Baptist Church, Walnut And Church St., Athol. Burial will private.
No calling hours are are scheduled.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to the Athol-Orange Baptist Church, Walnut and Church St., Athol, MA 01331.
