ATHOL- James S. “Stogie” Young, 93, of Athol, died Friday, January 27, at Baldwinville Skilled Nursing Center, Baldwinville.
He was born December 19, 1923, in Chatham, New Brunswick, son of the late James M. and Constance (Stewart) Young. He graduated from Athol High School in 1942. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Mr. Young worked for Union Twist Drill for 37 years, retiring in 1985. He was also a bartender at Bob and Omer’s Barroom and the Silver Front Cafe in Athol. He was the superintendent of the Chuck Stone Little League and enjoyed many years umpiring for Little League and the Beer League / Pequoig Softball Sunday mornings. He enjoyed trips to Florida.
Mr. Young was a life member of the VFW Post 650, life member, past commander and treasurer of the American Legion Post 102, and the Athol Elks Lodge 1837. He was also an avid golfer.
He leaves his wife, Arline (Baxter) Young; three daughters, Sally A. Litchfield of Snellville, GA, Patricia J. Young of Athol, and Susan Alford of Lady Lake, FL; one granddaughter, Lynn Beasley of Palm Desert, CA; 2 great grandchildren, Graci and Coral; one sister-in-law, Phyllis Landry of Suffield, CT; one cousin, Florence Gelinas of Orange, MA; five nieces and nephews, Kevin Chiasson of Springfield, Kathryn Maggio of Enfield, CT, John Chiasson of Enfield, CT, Terry Batista of Newington, CT, and Linda Landry of Newington, CT.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Marie E. (Chiasson) Young, and his grandson, Craig Beasley.
The funeral with military honors, will be held Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Rd., Orange. A calling hour will precede the funeral. Burial will be private.
