ATHOL - Jean Paul Brault, 89, of Athol, died on Monday, December 19, 2011 at the Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol.
He was born in Troy, Vermont, on January 26, 1922, the son of the late Avilla “Hector” Brault and Aurore (Brault) Brault.
He worked at the L. S. Starrett Company for thirty-eight years in dept. 16 until his retirement in 1984. He was a licensed painter and paperhanger with his partner Kenneth Wilcox for many years. He was truly a perfectionist with any job he was asked to perform.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1182. In 1981 and 1992 he was honored with The Man of the Year Award from the K of C for his outstanding work for charity. He so enjoyed the K of C meetings and the friendship he had with his fellow knights. He was a member of the Athol American Legion Post No. 102.
He received an honorable discharged from the Army of the United States in 1945 where he was an Electrician specialist. He served his country in Normandy and Northern France. He was decorated with the Good Conduct Medal; Victory Medal; American Theater Campaign Ribbon; European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon and attained his Marksman Rifle Badge.
He was a faithful communicant of Our Lady Immaculate Church where he and his wife were married. Years ago, he loved singing in the choir. Jean served as an usher for many years until his health failed. He always enjoyed working at the church fair.
Jean was a master at doing crossword puzzles. He enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage and poker. In his younger days, he loved to go deep-sea fishing. He was a lover of animals, in particular the Carbone Family Labs and his squirrel friend “PePete”, that use to eat right out of his hand. He loved to watch the birds at the birdfeeder. Jean enjoyed planting a vegetable garden every year until the age of 85 when he just could not do it anymore. He would always share the harvest with family and friends.
He was very proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jean's great sense of humor and love for his fellow man will be greatly missed. He was such a polite and honest gentleman.
He leaves his loving wife Hedwidge, “Hedy” (Mallet) Brault, they were blessed with 65 years of marriage; two sons, Denis J. Brault and his wife Denise of Poinciana, FL, Mark R. Brault and his wife Jill of Sandwich, MA; three daughters, Janet M. Mousseau and her husband Kenneth, Irene A. Drozdowski and her husband John both of Athol, Theresa L. Deloffi and her husband Peter of Bourne; twelve grandchildren, Diane Snyder and her husband Thomas; Darryl Brault and his wife Silome, Taunya Poser and her husband William, Jarret Mousseau and his wife Cheryl, Melissa Holden and her husband Richard, Matthew Deloffi, Danielle Brault, Jennifer Brault, Nichole Allen and her husband Michael, Christopher Brault and his wife Kandi, Briana Newton, Andrew Newton; twelve great grandchildren, Adrianna Brault, Alexis Brault, Matthew Brault, Ashley Snyder, Skylar Brault, Kellen Brault, Hunter and William Storm Poser, Trever and Kayden Mousseau, Skylar and Michael Allen, Jr.; one brother, Louis Brault and his wife Adrienne of Athol; a sister in-law Lucy Mallet of Bedford, NH, a sister in-law, Virginia Gleba of Greenfield, MA; a brother in-law Donald Mallet and his wife Lorraine of Orange; and many beloved nieces, nephews and great friends.
He was predeceased by his five-month-old great-grandson, Colby Michael Brault; by two brothers, Maurice Brault, Roger Brault; and by two sisters, Jeannette Marcotte and Simone Currier.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, December 29, 2011 at 11 a.m. in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol. Burial with full military honors will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, December 28, 2011 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Road, Orange.
In lieu of flowers, Jean always had a great concern for those who hunger, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in his memory to the Food Pantry c/o Our Lady Immaculate Church 192 School St., Athol, MA 01331.
