MARLBOROUGH – The sisters of the Assumption mourn the loss of Sr. Jeanne d’Arc Poirier, formerly known as Sr. Jeanne d’Arc Marie, who passed away peacefully at Alliance Health at Marie Esther on Saturday, January 2, 2021. She was a native of Southbridge, Massachusetts, the daughter of Leona (Cotnoir) Poirier and Louis Poirier.
Sr. Jeanne d’Arc entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Assumption on February 2, 1944. Following her religious profession, she served in the ministry of education as a primary grade teacher in Lowell, Chicopee Falls, Salem, MA and Glens Falls, NY. She served as Principal and Superior in Salem, Lowell, Chicopee Falls, MA and Barton, VT. She also served as secretary of the Religious Education Department of Sacred Heart Parish in Laconia, NH. Sister Jeanne d’Arc’s former students, as well as the members of her Religious Community, loved and appreciated Sister’s generosity and kindness. At 98 years old Sr. Jeanne d’Arc was still receiving letters, cards and gifts from students and friends. After retiring from the education ministry, she performed many community services. In 2010, she moved to St. Chretienne Retirement Home where she devoted her time to prayer especially for her family and former students.
Sr. Jeanne d’Arc is survived by her sister, Theresa Carter, her sister-in-law, Rita (Therrien) Poirier and many nieces and nephews. Because of the COVID-19 regulations, the Funeral Mass will occur at a later date. A special burial service will be in East St. Cemetery, Petersham, MA.
