ATHOL - John J. Butkiewicz, Sr., 88 of 88 Drury Ave., Athol, died Tuesday, January 3, 2006, in the Quabbin Valley Healthcare, Athol.
He was born in Worcester, on August 6, 1917, the son of the late James and the late Eva (Butkiech) Butkiewicz. He grew up in Worcester and graduated from North High School.
Mr. Butkiewicz was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. He was involved in battles and campaigns in the Rhineland, Central Europe and Rome Arno. He received the following decorations and citations; Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, European Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Purple Heart.
He was a machinist at the United States Steel in Worcester for over 30 years. He was a Barber in Worcester for several years after retiring from United States Steel.
He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church, he was active in the Boy Scouts Mohegan Council in Worcester for many years and he had his pilot's license.
He leaves two sons, John J. Butkiewicz, Jr. of Athol, David W. Butkiewicz of Mansfield, MA; one sister, Edith Zawilski of Auburn; four grandchildren, Joshua Butkiewicz of Athol, Jenna Butkiewicz of Athol, Samuel Butkiewicz, Kimberly Butkiewicz of Worcester; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Doris (Conway) Butkiewicz who died in 2004, by a son, James B. Butkiewicz who died in 1991, by a brother, Edmond Butkiewicz, and by a sister, Ann Stadolnik.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, January 11, 2006, at 10:00 am in St. Francis Of Assisi Church, 101 Main St., Athol. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Leicester.
A calling hour will be held Wednesday, January 11, 2006, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main St., Athol, MA.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to St. Francis Of Assisi Church, 101 Main St., Athol, MA 01331.
