LEOMINSTER - John R. Butler, age 95, of Leominster died Friday, January 2, 2015 at Health Alliance Leominster Campus.
Mr. Butler was born September 5, 1919 in Waltham, the son of the late Sylvester and the late Irene I. (Rice) Butler. He was predeceased by his wife Jean S. (Gilles) Butler and his son Robert John Butler.
Mr. Butler was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army.
He was a resident of Hudson for many years and also lived in Waltham for 27 years.
He worked as a Conductor for the Boston & Maine Railroad for 40 years retiring in 1980.
John was a member of the American Legion Post #20 in Woodsville, NH; a life member of the Hudson Lodge of Elks and a member of the United Transportation Union Local 898.
He is survived by his niece and caregiver, Janice Rogers of Marlboro; nephew, Richard Holland of Marlboro, niece, Ann Brady of Florida; nephew, James Gilles of Florida; niece, Ann McIntyre of Milford; niece, Barbara Weaver of Hudson; nephew, Michael Gilles of Bolton; nephew, Joseph Butler of Hamilton, MA; nephew, Larry Butler of Beverly; niece, Rosemary Mone of Cohasset; his close friends, Bob Dusalt and Rita
Arsenault and many great nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, January 9, 2015 at St. Cecilia's Church, 180 Mechanic Street, Leominster. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Cecilia's Cemetery, Leominster.
A calling hour will be Friday, January 9, 2015 from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. at the Simard Funeral Home, 14 Walker Street, Leominster.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in John’s memory to St. Cecilia's Church - Restoration Fund, 180 Mechanic Street, Leominster, MA 01453.
