ATHOL - John James Cox Jr. of Athol, MA passed away on Tuesday March 7, 2017. He was born on April 27, 1938 to John J. Cox and Margaret (Arthur) Cox in Boston MA.
He leaves his children: Jay Cox and Tracey MacDonald and her husband William MacDonald; a sister: Janice of Tempe, AZ; 6 grandchildren: Jennifer (Gelinas) Gauthier, Neil MacDonald & his wife Amy, Lauren MacDonald, Maddison MacDonald, Jessica Cox, Gabrielle Cox; 2 great-grandchildren: Jacob MacDonald, Carter Holloway and many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his wife of 44 years: Jean (Cummings) Cox; brothers: George Cox, Jim Cox, Victor Cox, Gerald Cox and Sisters: Rita and Marie.
John attended St. Anthony’s Elementary in Allston, MA, St. Columkilles High School in Brighton, MA and earned an Associate Degree from Western New England College.
John also served in the United States Coast Guard as a Boatswain’s Mate 3rd Class from 1961 to 1968.
John enjoyed playing softball, hunting, camping and he was a huge sports fan. He loved playing cribbage, Fantasy Football, summers at the beach and spending time with family and friends.
He served 32 years on the Newton Police Department as well as Treasurer of the Newton Police Department Memorial Fund and was a member of the Newton Police Color Guard. He enjoyed his many years of volunteer work at both Our Lady Immaculate Food Pantry and Sharing Our Father’s Bread.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday March 25, 2017 at 10:30 AM at Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St. Athol, MA. Burial will follow at Silver Lake Cemetery Athol, MA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of John to Our Lady Immaculate Food Pantry or Sharing Our Father’s Bread, 192 School St. Athol, MA 01331
