LEOMINSTER- John C. Fiandaca, 84 of Leominster, died Friday, October 17, 2008 in the Life Care Center of Leominster.
Mr. Fiandaca was born January 7, 1924 in Fitchburg, the son of Christopher and Josephine (SanGiorgio) Fiandaca and lived in Leominster most of his life.
Mr. Fiandaca was a member of St. Bernard's High School Class of 1941, where he played Varsity Baseball.
Mr. Fiandaca was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving in WWII. He served in both the Eastern Theater and the Pacific Theater areas and received eight battle stars for service aboard the U.S.S. Calvert (APA32).
Mr. Fiandaca was employed as a Labor Representative and International V.P. for the RWDSU AFL-CIO in Leominster for 35 years before retiring in 1986.
Mr. Fiandaca was a member of St. Anna's Church, the sons of Italy in Leominster, the American Legion Post #0151, the Italian-American War Veterans in Fitchburg, the Eastwood Club, Inc. in Fitchburg, Monoosock Country Club in Leominster and the Lake Worth Golf Club in Lake Worth, FL.
Mr. Fiandaca served on the committee to establish the Montachusett Opportunity Commission in 1966. In 1975, Mr. Fiandaca was recognized as an Honorary Citizen for the Boy's Town of Rome, Italy. In 1980, he was listed in the U.S. Labor Department's Who's Who and in 1985, the Evening Post Gazette of Boston named Mr. Fiandaca as Man of the Year.
Mr. Fiandaca was a former Trustee for Leominster Hospital and a Past Chairman for the United Way in Leominster in 1968 and active in the United Way for 28 years.
He was also a former member of the Leominster Order of the Elks, the Leominster Knights of Columbus and the former Columbian Club in Fitchburg.
Mr. Fiandaca leaves two sons and their wives, David R. Fiandaca and his wife Anita, John B. Fiandaca and his wife Rosalind; seven grandchildren, Lisa Oliver, Lori Fiandaca, Christopher Fiandaca, Melissa Gonzalez, Angela Fiandaca, Daniel Fiandaca, Anthony Fiandaca; and four great grandchildren, Todd Oliver, Maria Fiandaca, Lea Fiandaca-Longo, and Antonio Fiandaca.
Mr. Fiandaca was predeceased by his wife, Anna (Proietti) Fiandaca, who died on November 16, 2003. John and Anna were married for 57 years. Mr. Fiandaca was also predeceased by his three brothers, Anthony Fiandaca, Alphonse Fiandaca, and Joseph Fiandaca; and by his two sisters, Florence Canu and Christine Wise.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Anna's Church, Lancaster St., Leominster. Burial will follow in St. Leo's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Monday, October 20, 2008 from 6-8 p.m. in the Simard Funeral Home, 14 Walker St., Leominster.
