ATHOL - John Foglia peacefully passed away in his home on Thursday, May 1, 2008 after an extended illness.
He was born in Boston, MA, on October 5, 1925, the son of the late John Foglia and the late Virginia (Giberti) Foglia.
He was a graduate of Athol High School in 1943 and a graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1945. He graduated with a degree in Maritime and Electrical Engineering. During World Ward II, John served as an Engineering Officer of Ocean-Going Tankers. During the Korean War, John was attached to the Boat Division of the United States Army. After this, John spent his remaining 38 years of service at sea where he traveled to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and other Far East countries. John enjoyed spending his free time gardening and socializing with is many friends. He was also a dedicated member of the Athol Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Athol American Legion, the Lithuanian Club and the Franco American Club.
He is survived by his brother Dr. Carl R. Folia of Avon CT, his sister Claire Woods, of Kane, PA, numerous and nieces and nephews. He also leaves his close friend Brigitta White.
John was a devoted son, brother and uncle who will always be remembered for his quick wit. A special thank you to the Visiting Nurses Association as well as privates nurses, Linda Ramdall, Ruby Stowell, Pat Provencier and Kim Lucier.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 10:00 am in the Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
In Lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
