John A. Grindrod
Athol – John Arthur “Jack†Grindrod, 84, died Monday, July 02, 2012 at the Legend Center in Gardner.
Jack was born in Phillipston, Massachusetts, August 9, 1927, the son of William Grindrod and Helen Isabel (Keane) Grindrod. He grew up in Roxbury, attending schools in Roxbury and Phillipston. He returned to Phillipston in the 1940’s, later moving to New York for 30 years and returning to Phillipston in the 1980’s and since 2007 has resided in Athol. John served in the U.S. Navy during WW II serving aboard the USS Webster and USS Louisville.
Jack worked for the L.S. Starrett Company for 15 years until his retirement. He had previously worked as a waiter in several restaurants and owned and operated a fence company, both while living in New York. He enjoyed collecting coins, baseball cards and walking his dog.
He leaves a brother, Frank Grindrod and his wife Dorothy of Shutesbury, MA; two sisters, Helen Phelps of Williamstown, MA and Barbara Fenster of Titusville, FL; a sister-in-law, Theresa Grindrod of CA and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his friend, Caroline Kidder of Athol. He was predeceased by three brothers; Wallace, Richard and Raymond Grindrod
A service with Military Honors will be held Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 1:00 p.m.at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon. There are no calling hours and in lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
