John Arvid Sund, 90, of Lunenburg passed away peacefully at the Health Alliance Hospital on January 4, 2019. Born in Gardner, John was the son of Arvid and Anna Sund.
He is survived by Marion, his wife of 68 years and was a resident of Westminster for over 60 years. He is also survived by his son John, of Oakham, his daughter Jane Ranley and her husband Tom, of Lunenburg, his grandson Robert, of Boston, grandson Marc and his wife Lauren, of Lakeville and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John is predeceased by his sisters Gunhild Szymakowski, Mabel Geyster and Gerda Kelley and his brother Bertel.
John attended Gardner schools and served 2 years in the U.S. Navy. He then began a lifelong career in construction working for H.V. Lindberg Construction, building and renovating numerous schools, mills and banks in the Fitchburg-Leominster area, as well as the Fitchburg Library and additions to Leominster Hospital. He also worked as a construction supervisor for McKenzie Engineering and Leominster Engineering.
Upon retiring, John learned to play golf and spent many a day playing at the Petersham Golf Course. John and Marion enjoyed trips to Florida, Alaska, Canadian Rockies, Branson, Nashville, and Nova Scotia. He also volunteered as an ombudsman for 5 years, visiting area nursing homes and making sure patients were well cared for. When his shoulder would not allow him to play golf, he joined Silver Sneakers and enjoyed his daily walks, as well as working in his garden. John was blessed to live a long and full life.
His family gratefully thank the nursing staff at the Health Alliance Critical Care Unit for making his last days comfortable.
The memorial service will be private and burial will be at the Wildwood Cemetery in Gardner.
