ATHOL - Joseph W. Cummings, 78 of 433 Harvard Avenue, Athol, died Monday, July 25, 2011 at home.
Joseph was born in Orange on February 7, 1933, the son of the late Arthur N. and the late Eva E. (Sweeney) Cummings. He attended Warwick and Athol schools and resided in Warwick and Orange before moving to Athol sixty-six years ago. Mr. Cummings served during the Korean War in the United States Army. He worked as an assembly grinder for the L. S. Starrett Company for twenty-four years. Joseph coached and managed the Chuck Stone Little League of Athol in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He enjoyed camping throughout New England, country-western music and spending time with his family.
He leaves his wife of fifty-eight years, Marilyn L. (Goodwin) Cummings; two sons, Joseph W. Cummings, Jr. of Royalston, Robert E. Cummings of Athol; one sister, Hazel M. Beauchemin of Athol; six grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Marie A. Gates and Margaret A. Sicard.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in the Fiske Funeral Home, 1356 Main Street, Athol. Burial will follow in Tully Cemetery, Orange.
A calling hour will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to Orange United Methodist Church, 104 South Main Street, Orange, MA 01364 or to Gardner Visiting Nursing Association, 34 Pearly Lane, Gardner, MA 01440.
