NEW YORK, NY - Joseph Garoppolo of New York City, husband of Anita Jankowski Garoppolo formerly of Gardner, died on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 in New York City at the age of 94.   Joe was born in New York City on January 31, 1918 the eighth of nine children.  He was educated in New York and began his career as a Court Reporter.  He was a World War II Veteran and earned his bachelor's degree under the GI Bill.   Joe began his career with Social Security as a Field Representative and assistant to an Administrative Law Judge.  He held a variety of supervisor and management positions in the New York Area.  He was an active community leader in Midtown, Washington Heights, and Jamaica, NY.  He was recognized by Social Security and the community with a number of awards for his outstanding contributions.  He retired from the Social Security Administrations in 1978 after a distinguished managerial career.  Once retired, he actively managed his real estate holdings and other financial activities.  He loved to travel, making many international trips during the years following his retirement.  He was also a favorite of his large and extended family for his kindness, support and wonderful stories about growing up in New York City during the Roaring 20's and Depression years that followed.   Joseph is survived by his wife, Anita, formerly of Gardner, a daughter, Mary Jo Anzel of Port Washington, NY, a son Anthony of New York City, a grand-daughter, Sandra Hodgson of Sleepy Hollow, NY and a a great grand-daughter, Carly Jayne Hodgson.     Joe was very much loved by his late and extended family.  He will be greatly missed.   Funeral services will be held at the Holy Family Chapel at Mary Manning Walsh Home in New York City.  A graveside service will be held Monday, December 3, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Cemetery, West St., Gardner.  Where he will rest with his father-in-law and best friend, Walter Jankowski and his family.   To sign the online guest book please visit www.poliksfuneralhome.com.   Poliks Funeral Home, 431 Pleasant St., Gardner is directing local arrangements. $(document).ready(function(){ });
