GARDNER - Joseph "Joe" Eugene Cyganiewicz, 84, of Gardner, died Monday, February 26, after a brief illness at Quabbin Valley Healthcare surrounded by his loving family, wife Lorraine, sons Michael and his fiance Vivian, Alan and his wife Deborah, Kris and his wife Robin, Steve and his wife Mary Ellen, and daughters Francine Scott and her husband Lawrence, Angela Gorman and her partner Mark Navaroli, Grace Crawford and her husband Mark, and several grandchildren. He was born February 27, 1933 in Gardner, son of the late Stanley and Blanche (Dymek) Cyganiewicz.
Joe grew up in Gardner and graduated from Gardner High School with the Class of 1951. He married his high school sweetheart, Lorraine, with whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage. He worked for Simplex Time Recorder in Gardner for 36 years. Joe proudly served our country in the Massachusetts Army National Guard Company B 1st Battalion 181st Infantry Regiment for 22 years and retired attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. After raising their family in Gardner, Joe and Lorraine lived in both Athol and Orange for a period of time until returning to Gardner a few years ago.
Joe will be remembered for his caring, hard working, quiet and generous spirit and his strong Christian faith. Family always was first. He enjoyed fishing (especially night fishing), reading, taking long driving trips through New England, hiking around the Quabbin Reservoir and eating out at a variety of restaurants with friends and family. He also enjoyed model airplanes, military history and collecting minerals.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Johnny and Leon Cyganiewicz, three sisters, Nellie Wesockes, Blanche Aucoin and Mary Cyganiewicz, infant grandson Joseph Stanley Scott, in-laws Edmund "Ted" Gorman, Amédée and Sylvia Robichaud, and Jeanette Deveau.
He leaves to mourn his passing and to celebrate his life his wife, sons, daughters, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law and 12 grandchildren Rebecca, Holly, Alisha, Jason, Beth, Shannon, Tiffany, Jordan, Marissa, Justin, Taylor and Victoria, sisters Stella Shilko and Stazy Fredette; 14 great grandchildren, Alexis, Isaiah, Wesley, Kinsley, Shiley, Shanique, Jaden, Dylan, Ariannah, Kayleigh, Jacob, Liannah, Mackenzie and Alexandra; in-laws Butch and Louise Stevens, Alphonse and Sandy Robichaud, and John Deveau; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
A calling hour will be held Thursday, March 1, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lamoureux-Smith & Poliks - A Mack Family Funeral Home, 105 Central Street, Gardner. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 2, 2018 at 10:30 A.M at the funeral home.
Burial will be private at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon, MA.
