ATHOL - Joseph F. Maga, 63 of Athol, died Wednesday, August 29, 2018 in UMass Memorial Heathcare - Memorial Campus, Worcester.
He was born in Athol, on January 6, 1955, the son of the late Joseph G.and the late Marguerite A. (Aguda) Maga.
He grew up in Athol and graduated from Athol High School with the class of 1973. He graduated from Worcester State College with a degree in Education and went on to receive his Masters Degree in Education from Worcester State College.
Joe was a teacher and administrator in the Quabbin Regional School District for 25 years, retiring in 2005. Because of his love for this community, Joe felt the need to give back his time and energy to it.
Over the years he held the following elected positions in Athol; Athol-Royalston Regional School Committee from 1976-1996 and 2007 to present; Selectman – 1990 to 1996 and 1999 to 2005;
Town Meeting Member – 1974 to 2000 (change of government to Town Charter); Democratic Town Committee – 1976 to present; Athol Housing Authority – 1980 to 1984; Committees served on: Memorial Building Committee, Personnel Board, Needs Assessment Committee, Friends of the Council on Aging where he was the first President.
Joe was a member of the Athol Lithuanian Club and the Franco-American Club. He enjoyed playing cards and socializing with family and friends.
He leaves four sisters, Janet A. Treger and her husband Jacob and their sons, Benjamin and Michael of Los Angeles, CA, Frances E. Maga and her wife Kate of Mississippi, Ann M. Caldwell and her husband David and their son William of Athol, Diane M. Page and her husband William and their son Alexander of Athol.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at 10:00 am in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol . Burial willbe private at a later date in Gethsemane Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday, September, 4, 2018 from 5 - 8 PM at Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Road, Orange.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made in Joe’s memory to the Athol High School Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 338, Athol, MA 01331.
