Joseph A. Sabulis

GARDNER - Joseph A. Sabulis, Jr. 90 of Gardner, died Thursday, March 26, 2009 in the UMass Memorial Medical Center, Worcester. He was born in Gardner, on October 7, 1918, the son of the late Joseph A. and the late Anna (Grigalauskas) Sabulis. Joseph grew up in Gardner and was educated in Gardner. Mr. Sabulis was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. He was a Corporal, Battery B, 907th Glider Field Artillery, 101st Airborne Division. He was involved in the following battles and campaigns, Normandy, Ardennes, Rhineland, he was seriously wounded in Bastogne, Belgium. He received the following decorations and citations; Good Conduct Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, EAME Campaign Ribbon with three battle stars, Glider Badge, Bronze Arrowhead, Presidential Unit Citation, Purple Heart and the Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on August 23, 1946. Mr. Sabulis was employed at the Heywood Wakefield Company for many years as a purchasing agent. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a member of the Gardner V.F.W. Post #905. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid sports fan he especially enjoyed the Red Sox. He leaves one son, Joseph T. Sabulis and his wife Patricia of Gardner; one daughter, Beverly Grady and her husband Jack; one sister, Helen Greenwood of Fort Pierce, FL; one brother, Stanley Sabulis of Gardner; two grandchildren, Shaun Grady of Holden, Kate Haney of Foxborough; four great grandchildren, Maeghan, Brendan, Stephen and Erin. He was predeceased by his wife, Josephine (Bartkus) Sabulis who died in 1986. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at 11:00 am in Sacred Heart Church, 166 Cross St., Gardner. Burial with full military honors will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Gardner. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, March 31, 2009, from 9 - 10:30 a.m. at the Mack Funeral Home 91 Vernon St., Gardner. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to Gardner Animal Shelter, Animal Control Facility 899 West Broadway Gardner, MA 01440.
