LONGWOOD, FL – Karl F. Maier, 80, of Longwood, formerly of Athol, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family, on Wednesday, March 2, 2016. Karl Frederic Maier was born to the late Karl F.G. and the late Violet (Hadley) Maier on May 24, 1935 in Lowell, Massachusetts. He leaves his companion of 30 years, Alice Linebarier of Longwood, a brother Paul H. Maier and his wife Freda of Athol, MA. He was a favorite uncle to Paul (Charon) Maier of Athol, Evelyn (Andrew) Soucie of Springfield, Alan (Michele) Maier of Dracut, and Elizabeth Dunning of Fitchburg. He also leaves numerous grand-nieces and nephews and cousins. In Florida he was considered a special grandparent to Ashley, Stephanie, Charlotte, Jarrod and Allison, and enjoyed being a part of their lives. Karl lived and was educated in Athol. He was part of Athol High Class of 1953 and graduated from New Salem Academy, Class of 1955. He was a veteran of the US Navy, serving from 1957 to 1961 and was honorably discharged with the rank of Engineman First Class. He was employed by the Martin Company, Orlando; and subsequently with Roadway Trucking Company for 18 years, living in Valdosta, GA, Moline, IL, and Winston Salem, NC. He has lived in Longwood since 1987. He was a manufacturing sales representative for Athol Table Manufacturing Company, a local family owned company, for several years covering the state of Florida. He owned and operated the Seminole Center Laundromat in Sanford, FL until 2007. He enjoyed automobiles, owned several Jaguars over the years and briefly participated in road rallies. He enjoyed singing, and sang with the Orlando Messiah Chorus for 8 seasons. He formerly sang with The Singing Men of Athol, and was a longtime member of Yankee Male Chorus, singing in New England during the summer months. A memorial service was held at his home in Longwood on March 6, with his sister-in-law, Rev. Freda Maier officiating. Burial will be later in June in Pine Grove Cemetery, Templeton, MA at the convenience of the family. To send an online condolence please visit mackfamilyfh.com.
