Lawrence H. Mounce

July 27, 1921 — December 30, 2016

ATHOL – Lawrence Hedley Mounce (aka) Lormy by the family, Pat by schoolmates and Larry by friends and co-workers, age 95, passed away December 30, 2016 at his home. He was born in N. Abington, on July 27, 1921 to Lawrence Mounce and Ellen Mae (Nellie) Cook. They moved to Family Homestead in Marshfield in 1930. Larry was the oldest of four children. His brothers are: Richard P. Mounce (deseased) and Robert Mounce of Titusville, FL, and his sister Edith Ann (Mounce) Beauregard of Attleboro. Reveling in the great natural world and farming, Larry learned hunting, fishing, trapping, and woodcraft. During his high school years he tried farming and raising chickens, rabbits, and Peking ducks. After a few “disasters” he decided that farming was not a good way for him to make a living. Also during his high school years, he worked as a landscaper, a groom for show horses and as a clerk in a supermarket. Graduating from high school in 1939 he took a post graduate course in drafting. After taking a Civil Service exam he got a job in the chemistry lab at the Watertown Arsenal. Larry was drafted into the Army Medical Corps in 1943 and worked as a Dental Assistant. After discharge from the Army he was hired by General Radio Company in Cambridge as a Drafter. He married his high school sweetheart, Lois A. Shattuck and built a home in Marshfield, where they raised two boys: Charles Everett and David Arthur. During those years he was a member of the First Congregational Church and served on the Board of Trustees. He was active as a Boy Scout leader and a member of Kiwanis and president of the Riding and Driving Club for horses. He spent many happy hours aboard the family motor launch, clamming, swimming and cruising. In 1980 Larry and Lois divorced and Larry married Jane Butling Finnimore of Acton to begin the second chapter of his life. With Jane, he helped raise her four children: Susan, Janet, Michael and Ian. In 1981 Larry joined the Concord Minutemen and played an active part as bass drummer. In 1983 the Minutemen made a 19 day performance tour to celebrate the anniversary of the Treaty of Paris starting in Edinborough and concluding in Paris with performances and participation in parades. He joined a square dance club in Concord and Blue grass festivals were the highlight of many weekends in the summer months. In 1984 Larry retired from General Radio Company (then known as GENRAD) after 42 years with the company. Moving to the Fall River area in 1985 he and Jane spent many years being “snow birds” living 6 months in Florida and 6 months in Massachusetts. In the winters they camped their way around Florida, meeting other campers, and enjoying the natural wonders of that state. Summers were either spent traveling or enjoying life in High View Campground in W. Brookfield. With a small trailer in tow they crisscrossed North America both through the USA and Canada from shore to shore several times and continued visiting blue grass festivals around New England. At the age of 81 and with some health issues Larry decided it was time to return to Massachusetts to be closer to family so he and his wife settled in Millers Woods/River Bend Park located in Athol. Larry leaves his son: Charles E. Mounce and his wife Theresa; he also leaves Susan E. Mead, Janet H. Finnimore, Michael J. Finnimore and Ian Finnimore; and grandchildren: Melissa A. (Mounce) Goodrich, Jeffrey L. Mounce, Sarah J. Carron, Eric J. Carron, Zachary Finnimore, Nathanial Finnimore, Alex Finnimore, Magan Chadsey, Heather Chadsey, and Alex Chadsey; and great grandchildren: Logan Mounce, Christopher Mabey, Ashley Maby, Alyssa Pratt. Jonathan Oaks and Jakob Carron; also great great grandchild: Lily Anna Mabey. A memorial service will be held at 12noon on Saturday, January 7, at Higgins-O’Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main Street, Athol. A calling hour will be held at 11 am on Saturday January 7 in the funeral home.
