ATHOL - Lawrence Hanscom Peavey, Jr., age 90, of Athol died Monday, February 6, 2017 at Quabbin Valley Healthcare. Lawrence was born December 25, 1926 in Milford. He is the son of the late Lawrence H. and the late Helen Eunice (Smith) Peavey.
He grew up in Hopedale and graduated from Hopedale High School. He enlisted in the Navy on his 17th birthday and served in World War II in the Pacific from 12/26/1944 to 7/6/1946 and remained in the Navy reserve until 1951.
After his discharge from the Navy, Lawrence earned an associate’s degree at Wentworth Institute of Technology in the M.C.T.D. program and also earned an associate’s degree in Engineering – Electronics at Northeastern University.
Lawrence was employed as a design engineer in the defense industry and authored at least one patent. He was a member of the VFW post 60 and the American Legion post 172.
He was, first and foremost, an accomplished woodworker but he engaged in a myriad of other hobbies as well. His range of interests included, astronomy, model railroading, and sailing and for the last 25 years he was an avid model airplane enthusiast.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years: Joyce L.(Temple) Peavey one son: Chris Peavey and his wife Nancy Kangas of San Diego, CA; He also has one granddaughter, Samantha (Sam) Peavey of San Diego, CA; a good friend, Jack Kacian of Royalston and a cousin, Robert Peavey of RI. He is predeceased by his son, Brian Temple Peavey.

A memorial service will be scheduled in the spring.
