ATHOL - Leo A. Manewich, 80, of 214 Vaughn Rd, Athol, died Thursday, September 17, 2009 in the Legend Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, Gardner.
He was born in Athol, on March 31, 1929, the son of the late Leo J. and the late Pauline (Petrousky) Manewich. Leo grew up in Athol and graduated for Athol High School with the Class of 1948.
He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953.
Upon returning from the service he married his wife Florence (North) Manewich on May 8, 1954.
He was employed at the former Union Twist Drill Company until it's closing in 1984. He went on to work for Niagara Cutter and retired in 1994.
Leo was a communicant of Our Lady Immaculate Church, a member of the American Lithuanian Naturalization Club in Athol; he served on the Board of Directors for many years and was Chairperson for their Scholarship Committee for many years. He was a member of the Athol V.F.W., and was an avid fan of the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox.
Leo enjoyed fishing, mushrooming, gardening and attending sporting events for his grandchildren.
He leaves his wife of 55 years, Florence W. (North) Manewich; one daughter, Jeanne Kovacevic and her husband Demil of Orange; three grandchildren, Benjamin Kovacevic, Jillian Kovacevic and Mary Kovacevic, all of Orange.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Maureen Manewich, on March 12, 1966.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 10:30 am in the Fiske Funeral Home, 1356 Main Street, Athol. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol.
A calling hour will be held Saturday from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to the American Lithuanian Naturalization Club - Scholarship Fund, 365 South St., Athol, MA 01331 or to a charity of one's choice.
