Leo L. Piro

ATHOL - Leo L. Piro, 86, of Athol died Thursday, October 1, 2015 at Athol Hospital. Mr. Piro was born April 10, 1929 in Fitchburg, the son of the late Liborio and the late Anna (Antocci) Piro. Leo grew up in Fitchburg and moved to Athol in 1949 when he married his wife Frances P. (Gabrs) Piro. Mr. Piro was a machine grinder and then became a Supervisor at Union Twist Drill Company during his 35 years there before he retired at the age of 58. He was a former member of the Athol-Orange Elks, he was a member of STEBS, and coached Athol Little League in the 1960's. He loved horse racing and his favorite time was spent on the dance floor with the love of his life doing the jitterbug. He is survived by two daughters, Julie Piragis and her husband Dennis of Athol, DiAnn Zichella of Athol; three sons, Leo Piro, Jr. and his wife Brenda of Orange, Rick Piro of Athol, Stanley Piro and his wife Susan of Orange; nine grandchildren, Sherri Maynard and her husband Joseph, Jaime Hume and her husband Lorne, Ryan Piragis and his wife Sarah, Joey Zichella, Leo Piro IV, Nicole Zichella, Michael Zimmerman, Stephanie Smith, Adam Zimmerman; ten great grandchildren, Natasha Piro, Colby Hume, Logan Hume, Gabriel Hume, Kacie Piragis, Avery Piragis, Aidan Zichella, Damon Zichella, Gianna Zichella, Vinny Zichella; one great great grandchild, Rylee Walsh and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Frances P. Piro, and by two brothers, John Piro and Paul Piro. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, October 9 at Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Road, Orange. Burial will be private. A calling hour will be Friday, October 9 from 10:00 - 11:00 am at the funeral home.
