ATHOL - Leslie G. "Gus" Bell, 87 of 739 Daniel Shays Highway, Athol, passed away Monday, August 23, 2010 at Quabbin Valley Healthcare, Athol. He was born in Westford, on September 4, 1922, the son of the late Robert J. and the late Jesse (Walkden) Bell, husband of the late Charlotte (White) Bell who passed away in April of 2010 after 61 years of marriage. Leslie grew up in Westford and graduated from Westford Academy. He served as an Aviation Machinist's Mate in the US Navy during WW II, from 1942 to 1946. Prior to his retirement in 1979, he was a civil servant employee for the U.S. government at Hanscom Air Force Base, working in the Electronics Systems Division for 35 years. Before moving to Athol, he and his wife lived in Wildwood, Florida after raising their family in Westford and Groton, MA. He was a member of the Athol American Legion. He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, camping, and woodworking. In his youth, he participated in the pit crew for midget race cars. He leaves one son: Kevin Bell and his wife Lois of Nashua, NH; two daughters: Diane Nutt and her husband Richard of Pepperell, Robin Hebert and her husband Bernard of Pepperell; a daughter in-law, Patricia Silva of Lowell; one brother: Robert Bell of Westford; six grandchildren: Mathew Nutt, Melissa Marison, Jeremy Nutt, Katrina Palanski, Brian E. Bell,Jr., Jessica Bell; two great grandchildren: Amanda and Ashley Nutt, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son: Brian E. Bell; his brother, Alan W. Bell; and four sisters: Carolyn Mulno, Jean Bell, Ethel Dupuis, and Marjorie Abreu. Memorial services will be held at Monday, August 30, 2010 at 11:00 am in the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 111 Glenallen St, Winchendon.
