Lorraine G. (Gagne) Wojtukiewicz

GARDNER - Lorraine G. (Gagne) Wojtukiewicz, 87 of 225 West Street, Gardner, died Monday, March 22, 2010 in the Baldwinville Nursing Home surrounded by her family. She was born in Gardner, on April 16, 1922, the daughter of the late George and the late Cecile (Pitre) Gagne. Lorraine grew up in Gardner attended Holy Rosary School and graduated from Gardner High School with the class of 1941. She was a top-notch goalie with the Gardner High field hockey team, helping to lead the team to a pair of undefeated seasons. She was secretary of her graduating class, and helped organize many class reunions over the years. After high school, she took a job at Carrroll Cut Rate on the cosmetics counter. Later, she worked for Heywood Wakefield in the shipping and receiving department, and also worked on a bomb fuse project during the war. In 1944 she married her husband Joe, she and Joe coached the Thayer Little League squad for over 13 years. She was the first woman board of director for the Gardner Little League. She also served as the first female Mystery Forecaster for The Gardner News back in 1969, and recorded the third-best percentage ever posted, at .806. She was famous for her postgame get-togethers at her home serving the boys Polish dinners or spaghetti feeds. She lived in the same neighborhood for her whole life, growing up in her family home on Coleman St. and living about fifty yards away on West St. raising her family. Lorraine was Assistant City Treasurer for over 24 years, she retired in 1984. She was very active in local politics and volunteered on many local campaigns. She worked at the polls for many years, helping with voter registration. She volunteered at the Gardner courthouse for many years. She was the first woman elected to the Gardner High School Football Hall of Fame in 1992. She was a communicant and very active member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church. She had a passion for bicycling, candlepin bowling and cross country skiing. She was on the ski patrol on a local ski area in Fitzwilliam, NH. She took many bike trips over the years. She was a huge fan of the Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics. She was well known as "the loudest fan" with her signature cowbell. She leaves two sons, Richard J. Wojtukiewicz and his wife Jessica of New Ipswich, NH, Robert J. Wojtukiewicz and his wife Carla of Gardner; a granddaughter, Lindsay Johnson of Foxborough; a grandson, Garrett Wojtukiewicz of East Boston; six nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Barker of Portland, ME; David Gagne of Amherst, NH; Peter Gagne of Cumberland, ME; Frank Danisienka of New Ipswich, NH; Brenda Tatro of Gardner; Deb Stoddard of Hong Kong; and several grand nieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Joseph N. Wojtukiewicz who died in 1993, by her grandson Nick Wojtukiewicz who died in 2009; by a brother, Ronald Gagne, and by her sister, Claire Danisienka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 10:00 am in Our Lady Of The Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St., Gardner. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours.
