Louis P. Brault, 91, died peacefully on September 11, 2015 at Applewood Senior Living where he resided with his wife, Adrienne. Louis was born on January 14, 1924 in Barton, Vermont to Avila (Hector) and Aurore Brault. He attended St. Paul’s elementary School in Barton and later graduated from Barton Academy. He served his country in World War II, mostly in France. His bi-lingual skills (French and English) allowed him to assist military officials in a number of capacities in addition to his own service as a military policeman. For a number of years he was an active member of the local Athol chapter of the American Legion. On Thanksgiving Day 1946 he married Adrienne Paquin at St. Paul’s Church in Barton, Vermont, after which the couple moved to Athol. Shortly thereafter they opened a grocery store at the corner of Hapgood and Harugari Streets which they operated for several years.
Later Louis worked as a delivery driver for Bachelder Auto Parts before working as a machinist at the L.S. Starrett Company. He retired in 1986. For many years, he and his wife were avid square and round dancers. They belonged to the Jumptown Twirlers where they served on the executive board and as Treasurers. They enjoyed camping and spent many summers at Springbrook Campground in Shelburne and wintered for several years in Newport Richey, Florida. Louis took an interest in town affairs, serving for a number of years as a town meeting representative. He was a member of the Christian Science Church. In addition to his wife Adrienne, he leaves five sons and
four daughters-in-law: Richard & Chris Ann, Steven & Kathy and David & LuAnn of Athol; Brian & Paula of Northfield; and Ronald of Westborough. Also five grandchildren: Adreanna of Montgomery; Amanda of Athol; Jeremy of Charlotte, VT; Philip of Newport, Wales; and Sarah of Norwood. Also four great- grandchildren: Alex, Cody, Elizabeth and Mallory. He was predeceased by a daughter-in-law Kathy Alioto Brault, his parents Hector and Aurore, and five siblings: Jean, Jeanette, Maurice, Roger and Simone.
A memorial service open to all is planned for Saturday, September 26th at Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Road in Orange, at 11am. Louis will be buried with military honors at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon at a private ceremony.
