GARDNER- Louis T. Owens, 95, of Winchendon, formerly of Gardner and Hubbardston, died Monday, October 9, at Broadview Assisted Living in Winchendon.
Mr. Owens was born October 15, 1922, in Portsmouth, VA, son of the late Albert and Thelma (Thornton) Owens. He graduated from Portsmouth High School. He retired from the U.S. Army. During his service, Sgt. Major Owens was awarded the Bronze Star and the Croix de Guerre by the French Government for exceptional service rendered in war during the operations for the liberation of France. Following his service, he worked as a campus police officer at Mount Wachusett Community College for ten years, retiring in 1985.
He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and was a volunteer there as well as at the CAC. He was a dedicated Red Sox and Patriots fan. He enjoyed camping over the years, especially at Salisbury Beach.
His first wife, Dorothy E. (Hawke) Owens, died in 1982 and his second wife, Patricia P. (Coffin) Owens, died in 2002. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Richard B. Owens and Shelton M. Owens.
He leaves two sons, Robert L. Owens and his wife, Maureen of Gardner, and KEnneth W. Owens and his wife, Donna of Ft. Myers, FL; one daughter, Lola L. Beaudoin and her husband, Gerald of Gardner; one brother, Allan B. Owens of Camden, WY; seven grandchidlren, Deborah McMrohon and her husband, Tim of Auburn, Heather Owens of Ashburnham, Allison Mazur and her husband, Clay of New Hampton, NH, Tim Owens of Athol, Michael Beaudoin of Leominster, Alan Beaudoin and his wife, LizAn of Tewksbury, and Shannon Barnes of Leominster; several great grandchildren, including Nicholas Mazur, with whom he was very close; several nieces and nephews.
