Mamie Teittinen-Sweeney, 92, of East Templeton, passed away peacefully in her home on September 1, 2018.
The Life of Mamie Teittinen-Sweeney: She was born August 7, 1926 in Gardner, MA. She was educated in local schools and graduated from Templeton High School in 1944, serving as Vice President of her Senior Class. She was a graduate of Fitchburg State Teachers College earning a Bachelors of Science in Education. She taught Grade 5 in Sterling, MA until she returned to East Templeton to teach Grade 4. She married Bob Sweeney in 1949, but waited 10 years to have children so she could continue teaching. After taking 12 years off to raise her family, she returned to teaching at Baldwinville Elementary School until her retirement, but continued to substitute until age 84. She referred to her students as “my kids.” She was a member of East Templeton Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She was Secretary to the Administrative Board Member of Board of Directors. She helped with church fundraisers, including church suppers and the Holiday Bazaar. She was a member of “Friends Group”, where she worked on card parties for seniors twice a month, and put on events with special speakers, music, and entertainment and holiday dinners for seniors many times a year. She was member of the Templeton Woman’s Club and State Federation of Mass. Woman’s Club and member of both the arts and education departments. She collected and distributed 100 books to Templeton Center Elementary School.
She loved to decorate for holidays and go for rides in her convertible. She would spend hours in her garden, relaxing by her pool, and vacationed at Lake Winnipesaukee for many years with her family and friends and enjoyed her boat rides with her husband.
She leaves her husband of 69 years, James R. (Bob) Sweeney; two daughters, Jamie Edwards and her husband, Gregg, and Susan Couture, and her husband, Robert; one son, Dean Sweeney; six grandchildren, Heather and Thomas Couture, Leigh, Peter, and Benjamin Edwards, and James Giacobbi; one brother, Paul Teittinen and one sister, Ida Carpenter; several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Templeton Woman’s Club Educational Scholarship Fund, payable to Doris Geyster, 51 Cross Road, Templeton MA, 01468.
Calling Hours will be held Saturday, September 8, 2018 from 12-2pm at the Mack Family Funeral Home, Lamoureux-Smith & Poliks Chapel 105 Central St. Gardner with a Funeral Service following at 2pm.
