GARDNER - Margaret Marie "Peggy" (Conners) Bernier, 82 of 13 Lovewell Street, Gardner, died Tuesday, December 22, 2009, surrounded by her family, in the Legend Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Gardner.
She was born in Gardner, on November 29, 1927, the daughter of the late John M. and the late Margaret M. (Nolan) Conners.
She was a graduate of Sacred Heart School, Gardner High School Class of 1945 and the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1949.
She worked as a registered nurse for the Boston Visiting Nurses Association, the Heywood Wakefield Company as an industrial nurse, the Gardner Manor and Heywood Hospital.
She was a communicant of Holy Spirit Church, a member of the Hospital Aid Association Central Mass Post, Golden Ages, AARP, Mass General Hospital Nurses Alumni Association, the Gardner Historical Commission, the Catholic Women's League, the Democratic City Committee and the Class of 1945 Reunion Committee.
She was a Charter Member of the Gardner Museum and the South Gardner Historical Society. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cooking, bird watching, post card collecting and genealogy.
She leaves her husband of 57 years, Gerard J. Bernier of Gardner; two sons, John Bernier and his wife Sharon of Richmond, VA, Robert Bernier of Amherst; one daughter: Carolyn Elmeer and her husband Andrew of Manchester, CT, five grandchildren: Meghan and Erik Bernier of Washington, DC, Sean, Andrea and Alyssa Elmeer of Manchester, CT; one sister, Mary E. Mack and her husband John of Gardner; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister Katherine Ralys of Athol.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 10:00 am in Holy Spirit Church, 50 Lovewell St. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Monday, December 28, 2009, from 3 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mack Funeral Home, 91 Vernon St., Gardner, MA.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in her memory to the Massachusetts General Hospital Nurses' Alumnae Association (MGHNAA), PO Box 6234, Boston, MA 02114.
