GARDNER – Margaret M. Delay, 94 of Gardner died Tuesday, July 12, 2016 in the Golden Living Center, Fitchburg.
She was born September 28, 1921 in Greenville, NH the daughter of Henry B. Delay and Margaret (Courtney) Delay. She grew up in Gardner and graduated from Gardner High School in 1939.
Margaret served as a Storekeeper First Class in the United States Navy Reserve (WAVES) in World War II and received the American Area Ribbon and the Victory Medal.
Following her service in World War II she attended Harvard College in their Physical Therapy Department. She worked for Mass Electric for many years retiring in 1981.
She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, a member of the Former Gardner Emblem Club, Past President and member of the former Catholic Women's Club of Gardner, Chairman of the Parks Department of Gardner for many years, member and former secretary of Heywood Hospital Aid Association, on the Board of Directors of the Diocesan League of Catholic Woman of Worcester, member of the former Holy Family League of Charity and was their first Chaplain, and she was Co-Chairman of the Heart Fund of Gardner for many years and a longtime member of the American Legion Post 129.
She leaves a sister Eunice S. Scanlon of Leominster; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by six brothers, Donald Delay and Richard Delay who were both killed in World War II, Paul Delay, John Delay, Philip H. Delay and Henry B. Delay, Jr. also by three sisters, Kathryn Blanch, Alice Delay and Winifred Delay.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. in Holy Spirit Church 50 Lovewell Street Gardner. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery Gardner.
A calling hour will be held Saturday, July 16, 2016 from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Mack Funeral Home 91 Vernon St. Gardner.
