ATHOL: Margaret Susan Shatos, formerly of Athol, died unexpectedly at Oakland Medical Center in Detroit, MI on Tuesday September 15th. Margaret was born in Gardner, MA, the daughter of the late Antena G. (Andreliunas) and Paul J. Shatos. She attended Athol schools, Putnam Catholic Academy and graduated from Maria Assumpta Academy in Petersham, MA. Margaret received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Detroit and did graduate work in Sociology at the University of Michigan. She was employed by the City of Detroit Parks and Recreation Department for over 40 years, eventually becoming the Director of the largest recreation center in Detroit. Margaret worked tirelessly with disadvantaged children and encouraged them to reach for high goals. She was beloved by the Hispanic and Black communities where she served on the board of directors for several churches and organizations. She loved the arts, and was known for her wonderful sense of humor and generosity. Margaret is survived by her sister Dr. Marie Ann Shatos of Athol and many dear cousins. She also leaves many close friends, especially Denise Cura, Jackie Doherty, Lee Ortiz, and Betty and Bill Todd.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, September 21, 2015 at 11:00 AM at St. Francis Church, 101 Main St., Athol. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held on Monday from 9:00-10:30 AM at Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Rd., Orange.
