Athol – Marie Bernadette “Bernie†(Butler) Litchfield, 85, of 409 Spring Street, died Thursday December 15, 2011 at the Quabbin Valley Healthcare
She was born in Athol, Massachusetts, February 26, 1926, the daughter of Henry and Flora (Caouette) Butler. Bernie has lived in Athol all of her life, graduating from Athol High School in 1944.
She worked at the Athol Area YMCA for many years until her retirement, previously working for Parachutes, Inc., Moskovitz’s Store and for the Western Union Telegraph Office. Bernie enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading, crossword puzzles, bus trips to Fox Woods and going to Old Orchard Beach, Maine with her family. She and her husband could be seen at many area coffee shops or walking the family dog Gabby. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Her husband of 64 years, Robert U. Litchfield died February 25, 2010. She leaves two daughters; Nancy Aiken and her husband Kevin of Athol and Marianne Litchfield of Orange; a son, Robert R. Litchfield of Athol. She also leaves three grandchildren; Ryan Aiken and his wife Katie, Aaryn Aiken and her companion Dan Morandi and Kaylyn Litchfield-Holmes; three great grandchildren; Branden Aiken, Keira McCorquodale and Emma Aiken; a brother, John Butler of Orange; two sisters, Rita Armienti of Ocala, FL and Theresa Gallager of Athol; two sister-in-laws; Betty White of Orange and Claire Butler of Athol; several nieces and nephews and the family dog Gabby. She was predeceased by two brothers, William and Joe Butler.
Private funeral services will be held at Higgins-O’Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main Street, Athol. There are no calling hours and burial will be held at Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests having a Mass celebrated in Bernie’s memory or to a charity of one’s choice.
