Marion L. (Groves) Hickey

April 11, 1925 — September 22, 2011

Marion L Hickey Athol – Marion L. (Groves) Hickey, 86, of 467 Vine Street, died Thursday, September 22, 2011 at her home.      She was born in Athol, Massachusetts, April 11, 1925, the daughter of  Clarence D. and Lelia B. (Kendall) Groves.  Marion grew up in Athol, graduating from Athol High School in 1942 and resided in Athol all of her life.      After graduating from high school she worked at the former Union Twist Drill as a secretary from 1941 until 1946.  She later worked at Pleasant Street School as cafeteria manager from 1967 until 1977 and Athol High School as cafeteria manager from 1978 until 1986.  Marion worked with her husband Bill doing custodial work from 1987 until 1992 at the M.O.C. Head Start Program in Athol.        She was a member of the Athol Congregational Church for 80 years, enjoyed the Red Sox and the Patriots and was active in the community counting votes at the polls for many years.  She also enjoyed decorating and working around her home.      She leaves her husband of 65 years, Walter W. “Bill” Hickey; two daughters, Laureen Wilder of Athol, and Lynn Bemis of Bolton, MA; two sons, Clift Hickey of West Palm Beach, FL and Peter Hickey of Exeter, NH; seven grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.  She also leaves two sister-in-laws, Barbara Phelps of Athol and Anne Hickey of St. Augustine, FL; and many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Bill Emmett, and a sister-in-law, Gloria Brennan.      Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at Higgins-O’Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main Street, Athol with the Rev. Dr. Beverly Prestwood-Taylor, pastor of the Athol Congregational Church officiating.  Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery and there will be a calling hour from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M..  In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made in Marion’s memory to the Athol Congregational Church, Book of Memory, 1225 Chestnut Street, Athol, MA 01331.  For further information or to share a memory with the family go to: www.higginsoconnorfuneralhome.com. $(document).ready(function(){ });
