ATHOL - Marion Sawin, age 89, died Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Quabbin Valley Healthcare. Marion was born October 26, 1927 in Hardwick. She is the daughter of the late Alton S. and the late Eunice (Hall) Martin.
She grew up in Ware and Athol, graduating from Athol High School in 1945 and since 1939 has resided in Athol and had been employed at F. W. Woolworth’s Store, Plotkins Furniture for 20 years, the Athol Comb Shop, L.S. Starrett Company and Bruce’s Pharmacy for 20 years until her retirement.
Marion was a member of Athol Congregational Church for 72 years, where she served on several committees and was known as the "Jewelry Lady". She was also a member of AARP Mt. Grace Chapter and the Athol Golden Age Club. She enjoyed playing bingo, traveling and especially spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by one daughter: Linda Sawin of Athol, and one son: Randy Sawin and his fiancé Lois of Tully; one daughter-in-law: Sharon Sawin; two sisters: Ruth Hills of Phoenix, AZ and Thelma Lamb of Petersham; She also has eight grandchildren, Jennifer Laffond of Orange, Elaine Gauthier and her husband Jason, Stephanie Goulette and her husband Bill, Cicely Sawin all of Athol, Melissa Lascellas and her husband Michael of Grand Isle, VT, Tara Bradford and he husband Craig of Easton, NH, Chad Cowdrey and his wife Loeva of Lexington, NC and Alicia Simpson and her husband Jamie of Dobson, NC; thirteen great grandchildren, Shelby, Jacob, Johnnie, Abigail, Marshall, Michael, James, Nicole, Teagan, David, Sadie, L.B. and Logan, several nieces and nephews, and her lifelong friend of almost 80 years, Marjorie Cooley of Petersham, and her best friend and partner in crime, Terri Barilone of Athol.
She is predeceased by her husband Fred O. Sawin, her son, Larry Sawin, brothers, Francis and Sherman Martin, twin sister, Marjorie Martin, and sisters, Ethel Martin, and Florence Roach.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 15, 2017, from 5-7pm at Higgins-O’Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main Street, Athol.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday September 16, 2017, at 11:00am at Highland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations in Marion's name may be made to the Memory Garden at the Athol Congregational Church, 1225 Chestnut Street, Athol, MA, 01331.
