GARDNER – Mary (Lucia) Salerno formerly of 24 Barthel Ave., Gardner died peacefully with family by her side at the Baldwinville Nursing Home on Monday, May 28, 2012, Memorial Day.
She was predeceased by her husband, Marco Salerno who died in 1976. She was the daughter of Joseph (Tata) Lucia and Philomena (Nana) Lucia. One of the first Italian families to immigrate to Gardner from Italy.
She was also predeceased by four sisters whom she sadly missed over the years, Angelina Babineau, Jessie Jengo, Rose Kymalainen and Josephine (Pepe) Smith. For many years they would get together for coffee and card playing in the afternoons at the Italian camp on Kendall Pond.
She leaves three daughters, Lola Richard of Leominster, Patricia Crowley of Gardner, Janet Barrieau of Gardner; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mary attended the Gardner High School Class of 1930. She was a very giving and charitable person who dearly loved family and the many friends she made over the years. Knitting was one of her passions. Proof was the many hats, booties and afghans she gave to family, friends and charitable organizations.
At her request there will be no calling hours. A memorial mass will be held Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 166 Cross St., Gardner, MA 01440. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Gardner.
