 ATHOL - Maxine A. (Bromley) Carey, 80 of 750 Riceville Road, Athol, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, April 27, 2012 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Hinesburg, VT, on July 16, 1931, the daughter of the late John and Violet (Kimball) Bromley. She grew up in Vermont before moving to the Athol area. Maxine worked along with her husband as they owned and operated the J.L. Carey Lumber Company on South Athol Road from 1972 to 1986. She went on to work as a Matron at the Ralph C. Mahar Regional High School for over ten years. She received several awards for her work and efforts while working at Mahar.   She was a member of the South Athol United Methodist Church for over 30 years, and was very active in helping on church suppers and cooking many baked goods for church fairs and outings. More recently she was a member of the Athol-Orange Baptist Church.   Maxine was a uniquely loving, selfless and caring person who was the matriarch of her family. Always displaying an unconditional love that brought a great sense of pride and security to her family and friends. Family was her priority. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, to whom she was known as Mema. Vacationing in Old Orchard Beach, Maine was a long-time family tradition Maxine enjoyed. She leaves three daughters, Sandra Hamlett of Athol, Patricia O'Lari of Athol and Michele Cote of Athol; four sons, Charles Cote of Athol, Gilbert Cote of Gardner; Chris Carey and his wife Kelly of New Salem, Brian Carey and his wife Martha of Athol; two sisters, Janice Wheelock of Orlando, FL, Brenda Bayer of CT; one brother, David Bromley and his wife Mary of CT ; twenty-one grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves four step-children, Thomas Carey and his wife, Barbara of Winter Haven, FL, James Carey Jr. and his wife Cristy of Monson, ME, Robert Carey and his wife Anne of Levant, ME, Brenda Hickey of Leominster. She was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, James L. Carey who died in 2007, and by two daughters, Cindy Bennett who died in 2001 and Kim Carver who died in 2003. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, May 2, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 10:00 am in the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Road, Orange. Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in her memory to Athol-Orange Baptist Church, 131 Ridge Ave., Athol, MA 01331.
