Mayre (Gelsomini) Schwartz went to meet her Lord on February 3, 2012 at the Baldwinville Nursing Home surrounded by her family.
She was born in Wakefield, MA on June 2, 1921 to Elpidio and Annie Gelsomini who moved to Gardner, MA in 1932. Mayre graduated from Gardner High School in 1939 and then spent a number of years living and working in Syracuse, NY where she met and married John Schwartz on February 10, 1968. Her niece, Debbie Sargent, was maid of honor at the wedding, and in recent years, her loving caregiver. John and Mayre moved back to Gardner to take care of Mayre’s parents, and resided on Jay Street for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, parents, and brother, Joseph Gelsomini.
She was one of the original tenants at Heywood Place, and lived there for many years. She had a beautiful apartment with a sun porch where she had many beautiful plants. She especially enjoyed growing cactus and had many different varieties, which were her pride and joy. She was a member of the AARP and Gardner Museum. In fact the Gardner Museum chose her apartment for one of their tours.
Mayre was always very active in church affairs. She loved knitting all the latest fads for her nieces, including leg warmers, scarves, sweaters, as well as beautiful afghans for the whole family. Her grand nephew and niece are the proud owners of “rainbow” afghans. When her eyesight started failing, she knitted dish cloths for her family. She also knitted many baby blankets for the hospital.
Her dinner parties were outstanding as she was a wonderful cook, and was always known for her feasts, especially on Christmas Eve.
Mayre enjoyed travelling and was fortunate enough to visit many places including Italy, France, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Scotland, Ireland, Holland, Germany, Portugal, Iceland, Russia, Australia and New Zealand.
Mayre was very devoted to all of her nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by her only brother Frank Gelsomini and his wife Gloria, as well as their children Debbie Sargent and husband Danny, daughter Jackie O’Dowd and husband Sean, and their children Liam and Bree. John Gelsomini and wife Kim, and their children Maria, John III, Tina, Lisa, Michael, Joey, Teresa, and Mark.
Nephews Larry Gelsomini and wife Karen and their children Anthony and Kim, Ricci Gelsomini, and wife, Patty and Michael Gelsomini, and wife Maryanne.
She also leaves her second husband Thure Ohman, and his children Dan and Denese, and two dear friends Kim Blake and Eileen Lobdell.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 18, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Baldwinville. Burial will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Gardner.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Baldwinville Nursing Home for the love and compassion they extended during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Baldwinville Nursing Home, 51 Hospital Road, P. O. Box 24, Baldwinville, MA 01436.
