Merl D. Newton

November 20, 1933 — March 6, 2025

Winchendon

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Merl D. Newton, age 91, after a period of declining health. Members of his family were at his side.

Merl was the son of the late Fay H. and Rieta B. Newton. Born in the City of Gardner, MA., he attended Gardner Public Schools and graduated from Gardner High School. While there, he was an active member of the track team. He was also a member of the Sea Scouts, where he participated in sailing regattas at Camp Collier, located on Lake Wompanoag.

Merl had many jobs early on but finally obtained what he truly wanted to do, and that was being a firefighter for the Gardner Fire Department. His career as a permanent full-time firefighter lasted 28 years, during which he spent the majority of his time at the Elm Street station. He also served as an acting lieutenant. He always tried to impart the knowledge and experiences that he had encountered in the fire service to the newest members of the department. He was secretary/treasurer for the Mid-State Mutual Aid Association for many years and was a member of the Worcester West Forest Wardens Association. He also delivered oil for the Bolster Oil Company of Gardner.

Merl leaves behind his five children: Deborah A. Wood of Savannah, Georgia; Robert W. and his wife Kathy of Hubbardston; Barbara J. Ares and her husband Richard of Gardner; Susan M. Cringan and her husband Paul of St. Augustine, Florida & Michael F. and his wife Catherine of Harvest, Alabama; 15 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren & many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 57 years Theresa M. Newton; a sister Thelma Neuvonen & brothers Avery, Lyle, Wayne & one great granddaughter.

The family would like to thank Broadview Assisted Living, Gardner Rehab & Nursing Center, Hanover Hospice & Mack Funeral Home.
