ATHOL - Michael Peter Gallagher, 66, of Athol died Monday, August 24, 2015 at UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus of Worcester.
Mike was born November 15, 1948 in Providence, RI, the eldest son of the late Wilfred M. and the late Barbara (Flynn) Gallagher.
He grew up in Rhode Island, moving to Stockbridge, MA with his family at 13 years of age. He graduated from Williams High School, where he was president of his graduating class. Mike was captain of the high school baseball team, played on the basketball team, and excelled academically. Upon graduating, Mike attended Providence College where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science.
Mike previously worked in Human Services. He primarily worked with at risk teens and adults with mental health issues.
He was a member of Our Lady Immaculate Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Athol American Legion, and the Providence College Alumni Association.
An avid sports fan, Mike loved the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, horse racing, and following Providence College basketball and hockey. Beloved by his family, Mike is remembered as being a great story teller who had a great wit and sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife, Kyong; one daughter, Kimberly McAllister of Hadley; one son, Jason McAllister and his wife Andrea of Athol; one grandchild, Emma; two sisters, Lee Gallagher and her spouse Nina Foppe of Alford, MA, Melissa Gallagher of Newton, MA; one brother, Sean Gallagher and his wife Carol (Vittorioso) Gallagher and his niece and godchild Grace Gallagher of Bolton, MA; and first cousins whom include Thom Flynn, Patricia Flynn, Kathleen Flynn, Peter Flynn and Diana Whalen of Providence, Cranston, and Narragansett, RI.
He was predeceased by his brother, Kevin T. Gallagher.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:00 am on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol.
Calling hours will be Friday, August 28, 2015 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Road, Orange.
