ATHOL-Myrtle L. (Sweet) Bennett, 83, of 67 Fern Street, died Sunday in Athol Memorial Hospital, following an illness. She leaves her husband of 52 years, Alfred A. Bennett; a daughter, Betty J. Hastings of Milwaukee, WI; two sons, Edward Domina of Athol, and Robert A. Bennett of Gulf Shores, Alabama; a step-daughter, Barbara Pralinsky of Athol; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Carol A Richardson, died in 1997.
She was born in Bellows Falls, Vermont, Dec. 28, 1918, daughter of Sam A and Ethel (Rumrell) Sweet, and lived most in Athol, most of her life. She graduated from Athol High School with the class of 1935.
Mrs. Bennett worked for the J. F. MacElwain Shoe Company, for several years, retiring in 1951. Previously, she was a waitress at the former Athol House and had worked at the Orange Shoe Company. She was a member of Our Lady Immaculate Church and the Athol Golden Agers. She enjoyed knitting, gardening and collecting antiques.
The funeral will be held Wednesday from the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main Street, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School Street. Burial will be in Silver Lake Cemetery.
Calling hours in the funeral home are 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
