ATHOL - Nancy A. (Smith) Washburn, 82 of Athol, died Thursday, December 20, 2012 in the Quabbin Valley Healthcare, Athol.
She was born in Athol, on December 9, 1930, the daughter of the late Charles Russell and the late Beatrice (Woods) Smith.
Mrs. Washburn grew up in Athol and graduated from Athol High School. She attended Mount Wachusett Community College and UMASS Amherst receiving her teaching degree. She taught at Narragansett Regional School as a reading specialist for many years. She was very active in raising and showing purebred Boston Terriers. She was a member of the residents’ council at Quabbin Valley Healthcare, an avid reader and she was always ready for a chat. She loved watching Red Sox games. While a resident at Quabbin Valley she participated in many activities including bingo, arts and crafts. She was a talented musician, having played in many local bands and gave drum lessons for years.
She leaves her husband of over 60 years, Allyn D. Washburn of Athol; three sons: Dennis Washburn and his wife Marilyn of Hampton, VA, Keith Washburn and his wife Nancy of Orange, Jay Washburn and his companion Helen Shea of Springfield; one daughter: Robin Washburn of Hampton, VA; four beloved grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her brother Charles “Buzz†Smith.
Funeral services will be held at Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at 11:00 am in the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Road, Orange. Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery.
A calling hour will be held Wednesday from 10 - 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in her memory to Quabbin Valley Healthcare - Activity Fund, 821 Daniel Shays Highway, Athol, MA 01331.
