ATHOL- Anele “Nellie” Martha Melaika passed away peacefully at home on October 4. She was daughter to the late Apolonia and Kasimir Melaika. Sister of the late Anne Zilinski, late Frank Melaika and late Janice Brookman Sidman. She was a beloved Aunt to many nephews and Great Aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Nellie was a lifelong resident of Athol and a lifetime parishioner of St. Francis church. She was a long-time member of the St. Francis women’s guild. She was a past treasurer of the Knights of Lithuania as well as a 50+ year active member. She was also past President of the Mount Grace Business and Professional Women’s Club. She worked at Cass and Company and retired from L.S. Starrett Company. Nellie loved to polka and travel and in her later years could be found watching her beloved Patriots and Red Sox. She rarely missed a game and enjoyed those long-awaited Championships. She had a big heart, infectious laugh, a spirit for life and a great story.
Nellie and her family want to give a final thank you to everyone who visited, cared for her and made her feel so loved and special while allowing her to stay in her home for many extra years.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, October 23 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Rd., Orange, MA
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, October 23, 2023 at 10a.m. at St. Francis Church, 101 Main St., Athol, MA
A Burial will follow in the Gethsemane Cemetery, Fielding Way, Athol, MA
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Francis Church, 192 School St., Athol, MA 01331.
