Norman C. Carey

October 8, 1952 — September 7, 2017

Orange- Norman C. Carey, 64 of Orange formerly of Athol, passed away on Thursday, Sept 7, at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Worcester surrounded by his loving family. Norman was born in Athol on October 8, 1952 to the late Loretta Y. (Porter) Carey and Robert M. Carey. Norman was a 1970 graduate of Athol High School and continued his education at Brom’s Hair Academy, fulfilling his dream of self employed hair stylist as owner/operator of Shear Designs of Athol, Orange for most of 46 years. To know Norman as Husband, Dad, Papa or just Norm was to love him. His quick and witty side or his serious “listen to me” side, this is who he was. He was known for his huge heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand. His family, even his extended family always came first. If you talked about Halloween or Christmas Norman’s smile couldn’t get any bigger. He spent many days and nights decorating and sharing it with others. For many years, he enjoyed volunteering along with his son and grandsons at the Athol Lions Club Haunted Hayrides. He had many talents, but was best known for crafts, gardening, decorating and especially those beautiful wedding, birthday or anything else cakes. Norman and Terry were always the best dancers on the floor and the fun of a party. He spent his summers in Maine making memories with his family and friends, which was very important to him. He was always the perfect host, ending with a kiss or hug goodbye until the next time. Norman leaves behind his high school sweetheart and love of his life of 45 years: Theresa K. (McCarthy) Carey of Orange; one son: Wayne Carey of Athol; two daughters: Charlene Verock and her husband Adam of Athol, Amy Hartman and her husband Jon of Middleboro; eight grandchildren: Devon and Dawson Softic, Trevor, Riley and Craig Carey, Arianna, Olivia and Brenna Hartman; five brothers and their wives, Robert and Mary of Orange, Brian and Donna, and Michael and Linda of North Carolina, Bruce and Jeanne of Athol, Frank and Amy of California; one sister: Sharon Humphrey and her husband Edward of Orange; mother and father in-law Barbara and Ted Haugen of Florida; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Norman was predeceased by his father in-law Leo McCarthy, sister Brenda Smith and brother Russell Carey. Calling hours will be held Friday, September 15, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Rd., Orange.
