GARDNER - Norrinne S. Sadowski, 78, of Gardner MA, passed away Monday, February 22, 2010 after an illness.
She was born in Lynn, MA and was one of four children of the late Zeb and Marcia Isabelle (Cosman) Belair. She graduated from Lynn Classical High School in 1948. She enrolled and graduated from the former Gardner State Hospital School of Nursing in 1950.
Her husband of 54 years, Robert "Bob" F. Sadowski died in 2005. Together they owned and operated Sadowski's Variety on Pleasant St in Gardner until 1997, when they closed the business to spend more time traveling.
They had four children, Robert "Bobby" F. Sadowski II who died in 2000 of Gardner, a son, Thomas W. Sadowski of Gardner, a son, Gregory R. Sadowski of Wilmington MA, and a daughter, Shirlene M. Sadowski-Raymond of Nashua NH. Norrinne is survived by her brothers, Laurence Belair of Salem NH, Donn Belair of Lynn MA, five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Norrinne was a life long volunteer of the Greater Gardner Area. Starting as a Cub Scout den mother in 1959, she eventually served as President and a member of the executive board of the Monadnock Boy Scout Council. Her dedication earned her the scouting district Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award the council can bestow.
For twenty years, Norrinne and Bob sponsored and cooked suppers for the Gardner High School Football team, starting when their son Bobby was a member.
After becoming a patient at Henry Heywood Hospital she became a volunteer. For many years she worked with the cardiac program that assisted individuals with rehabilitation. More recently she worked as a volunteer in the social services department.
As a member of St Joseph's church, she has participated and conducted fundraising efforts over the years. She also was a member of the parish council.
Active in the Polish American Veterans Auxiliary for many years, she has served as the President and Sergeant-at-arms of the Massachusetts PAV Auxiliary. In addition, she has served as President of the local Gardner PAV Auxiliary.
Norrinne was named Woman of Achievement by the Greater Gardner Business and Professional Women's Club in 1981.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 10 am in St Joseph's Church, 358 Pleasant St., Gardner, MA. Burial will follow at St Joseph's Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours will be held Friday, February 26, 2010, from 4 to 8 pm at the Poliks Funeral Home, 431 Pleasant St., Gardner, MA.
Memorial contributions can be made in Norrinne's memory to the Holy Rosary School, 99 Nichols St, Gardner, MA and St. Joseph's Church-fuel fund, 358 Pleasant St., Gardner, MA.
