Olavi "Ollie" Tolppa

ATHOL - Olavi "Ollie" Tolppa, 90 of 739 Daniel Shays Highway, Athol, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Friday, January 28, 2011. He was the beloved husband of Betty (Johnson) Tolppa whom he was married to for 58 1/2 years. He was passionate about his family and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. In addition to his loving wife, he leaves behind three children, Sandra Vysocky and her husband Brian Sr. of Athol, David Tolppa and his wife Donna of Portsmouth, RI and Susan Thibeault and her husband Rick of Ashburnham; ten grandchildren, Amy Thibault and her husband Paul, Melissa Lyesiuk and her husband Ryan, Matthew Tolppa, Brian Vysocky, Jr., Jesse Tolppa, Nicki Tolppa, Justine Thibeault and Alexander Thibeault; two great grandchildren, Koda Tolppa and Cailin Tolppa. He loved his family very much! Olavi was predeceased by his daughter, Karen Tolppa. Olavi worked for many years at Heywood Wakefield and retired from the L.S. Starrett Company in 1987. Olavi was a member of AARP and a former member of the Gardner Elks Lodge. He enjoyed traveling and recently visited Las Vegas and the National Parks with his favorite cousins, he also enjoyed camping, dancing (especially polkas which he danced to at his 90th birthday in September), nature, being outdoors and animals. He was proud of his Finnish heritage and his 1948 Farmall Cub Tractor that his son David recently restored. He loved accordion music and was a self-taught accordion player. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 3, 2011 at 11:00 am in the Fiske Funeral Home, 1356 Main Street, Athol. Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to Gardner Visiting Nursing Association - Hospice Care, 34 Pearly Lane, Gardner, MA 01440.
