Omer W. Chaisson, 90, of 623 East River St., passed away peacefully in his sleep Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at home.
Born in Shippegan, New Brunswick, Canada, Feb. 21, 1913, a son of Peter and Catherine (Mallet) Chaisson, he came to the United States in 1915 and was naturalized a U.S. citizen on Sept. 29, 1941.
He grew up in Athol and as a young man he worked on the railroad until becoming employed at the former Union Twist Drill Co., Athol, where he worked 35 years until retiring in 1977.
He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Athol, Athol Orange Lodge of Elks, and the National Rifle Association.
A golfer, bowler and dancer in his younger years, he enjoyed driving his sports car, spending time with his family and many friends.
He leaves his wife of 67 years, Evangeline M. (Chiasson) Chaisson; a son, Alan "Butch" Chaisson and wife, Sheryl of East Templeton; two daughters, Sheila Boudreau and husband, Gerald, Sharon Chaisson and long time companion, David Maroni all of Athol; a daughter in law, Claire Schiappa and husband, Sonny of Avon Park, Fla.; four sisters, Lucy DuBois, Lillian Kelley, Gertrude Lagimoniere and Clara Dooley all of Athol; eight grandchildren, Lynne White of Orange, Kenneth Chaisson of Belchertown, Daniel Chaisson of Avon Park, Fla, Jeffrey Chaisson of Florida, Michael Boudreau of Warwick, Deneen Mastorakis of Belchertown, Kristen Thibaudeau of Leominster and LeAnn Chaisson of Fitchburg; 11 great-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces.
His son, Richard O. Chaisson, died in 1992.
A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 105 Main St. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol
