GARDNER - Raymond G. Marchegiani, 86, of 21 Winslow Street, Gardner,died Saturday, December 5, 2009 in the Colonial Heights Nursing Home, Lawrence, MA.
He was born in Athol, on February 2, 1923, the son of the late Gino and the late Christine (Cimonetti) Marchegiani.
Raymond grew up in Athol and graduated from Athol High School with the class of 1941. He was an outstanding athlete excelling in football, which earned him a 4-year scholarship to St Anslem's College.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Marchegiani was co-owner, along with his brother Claude, of the IGA Supermarket in Gardner for many years.
He leaves his wife of 61 years, Edwina E. (Ambroze) Marchegiani; three daughters, Nancy Croteau and her husband Leonard of Westminster, Ellen Byron and her husband Joseph of Haverhill, Maria Cavaiuolo and her husband Dominic of Cheshire, CT; two sons, Jerome Marchegiani and his wife Laurie of North Andover, Philip Marchegiani and his wife Janet of Boxboro; one brother, Claude J. Marchegiani of Gardner and thirteen grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sister, Iris Dowal.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 11:00 am in the Mack Funeral Home, 91 Vernon St., Gardner. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery.
A calling hour will be held Thursday, December 10, 2009, from 10:00 - 11:00 am at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
