ATHOL - Rene R. Brunelle, 93, of 2 Pequoig Ave., Athol, died Wednesday, October 15, 2008 in the Athol Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Canada on October 11, 1915, the son of the late Arthur and Josephine (Letourneau) Brunelle.
Mr. Brunelle was raised and educated in Canada. He met his wife, Linda (Blanchard) Brunelle during the Hurricane of 1938 while staying in Athol, and they were married in 1946.
Mr. Brunelle served in the United States Army as Private First Class during World War II from November 2, 1942 to January 8, 1946. He was stationed in Normandy and Northern France with the Company B 5th Ranger Battalion. He was an Interpreter for the Ninth Air Force in France. He was credited with helping to defeat the Luftwaffe German Air Force. He was wounded in action in the European Theater on September 5, 1944, receiving the Purple Heart, European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, Victory Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge.
He worked at the L.S. Starrett Tool Company for nearly 35 years in the Nickel Plating Room. He was considered a very hard worker by those who knew him. He was a communicant of Our Lady Immaculate Church, a member of the VFW and the Athol Golden Age Club.
He leaves his wife of 62 years, Linda (Blanchard) Brunelle; three sisters, Rolande Melanson of VT, Rita Bolduc of CT, Theresa Cayouette of NH; two brothers, Albert Brunelle of CT, Roger Brunelle of CT; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol.
Calling hours will be held Friday, October 17, 2008 from 6-8 p.m. in the Fiske Funeral Home, 1356 Main St., Athol.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that Mass Intentions be made at a Church of their choice.
