Richard V. Dill

ATHOL - Richard V. Dill, 85 of 739 Daniel Shays Highway, Athol, died Wednesday, September 17, 2013 in the Athol Memorial Hospital. He was born in Orange, on May 6, 1928, the son of the late Clarence and Gladys (Brehaut) Dill. Mr. Dill married Mary T. Hachey on July 31st, 1948. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. He was a Tool Maker for many years employed by L.S.Starrett Co. in Athol and also worked for the former Athol Manufacturing Co. He served in the U. S. Navy from March 25, 1946 to January 21, 1948. Richard was a member of the L.S. Starrett Co. 25 Year Club, Northfield Country Club,  V.F.W. of Athol, The Tully C.C.C.  and attended public schools in Athol and the former New Salem Academy. He and his wife Mary wintered in Eustis, FL for the past 17 years. As a hobby, he built wood crafts and enjoyed selling the items he made at local fairs, especially birdhouses. As an avid sportsman he often went hunting and fishing, and participated in many local golf and bowling leagues. In addition to his wife Mary, he leaves three daughters: Dianne J. Dill  and her life partner William Mason of Athol, Christine S. Mackenzie of Athol, and Kathleen E. Phelps  and her life partner Jeffrey Auer of Holyoke. Other survivors include one half brother, William Dill of Middletown, R.I.; one half sister Jackie Herrman of Tennessee, nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. He was predeceased by one brother: Norman Dill of Fruitport, MI, and one half sister, Connie Broadhurst of FL There will be no calling hours and Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. At the family’s request, flowers are to be omitted and donations in Richard’s name may be made to the Athol Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, 2033 Main Street, Athol, MA  01331 or to a charity of one’s choice.
